(gas exchange between water and blood).<\/li>\n<li>Gills can absorb lower concentrations of available oxygen.<\/li>\n<li>Water is forced across the gill membranes, dissolved oxygen in the water is taken up by blood vessels and veins, while the carbon dioxide is exchanged.<\/li>\n<li>Most fish use <strong>buccal pumping<\/strong> (\u201cbreathing with ones cheeks\u201d) to force water past their gills (ex. Opening mouth to take in oxygen, closing mouth and raising floor of the mouth)<\/li>\n<li>Some use <strong>ram ventiliation<\/strong> -&gt; Swimming with an open mouth \u201crams\u201d water past gills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Gulping&#8221; <\/strong>air at the surface in low O<sub>2<\/sub><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">We will explore gill structure in a future lab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79\" style=\"width: 336px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-79\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mrpletsch\/files\/2017\/01\/fishgills-300x257.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"290\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 2: Structure of gills<br \/>(http:\/\/www.todayifoundout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/fish-gill.jpg)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Lateral Line<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>A row of sensory structures along the side of the body which sense vibrations in the water (Like a \u201csixth sense\u201d for fish!)<\/li>\n<li>Mechanoreceptors arranged in network along the head and body. (i.e. what is something that needs to be dealt with).<\/li>\n<li>Describe the lateral line and state its function.<\/li>\n<li>Compare a lamprey (class Agnatha) to a shark (class Chondrichthyes) &#8211; what is similar? What is different?
