My Teaching Philosophy

  • I believe in celebrating diversity in the classroom.
  • I believe every student has their own strengths and it is my job to assist the students in discovering their strengths.
  • I believe students should be given the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in different ways.
  • I believe in making real world connections that are meaningful to the students.
  • I believe in experiential learning through role-playing, interactive games, field experiments and hands-on activities.
  • I believe a classroom is a community of learners.

My teaching philosophy includes creating a safe and inclusive learning environment that celebrates diversity for different types of learners. Students need to feel safe and comfortable in order to learn and succeed. The most important aspect of my teaching philosophy is to build confidence in my students and believe in them; this can be achieved by giving students the opportunity to learn and demonstrate their knowledge through a combination of text, audio, movement and visual representations. The function of multimodality is important because students can express their understanding through their strengths. Another belief of mine is to make real world connections that are meaningful to the students; this can be achieved by gearing the IRP’s to topics that are relevant to the everyday lives of students. Lastly, I believe in taking an experiential learning approach in my teaching; lessons that involve reenactment, interactive games, field experiments and hands-on activities will be used consistently throughout my teaching.

My Ideal Classroom

A classroom should be viewed as a small learning community of its own where students with different abilities find their place and role. Students should be both contributors and participants in this community in which they have a voice and feel safe enough to use it. As a member of the community, students will understand each other’s perspective whether they agree or not and learn to problem solve. In addition, students are a community of learners in which they are not only learning with, but from one another.
