Future Direction
My practicum experience gave me a glimpse of what teaching is like. I have identified some strengths and weaknesses through this experience. One of my strengths, which is also one that affirms my love for teaching, is my innate ability to connect with children. This ability has allowed me to have fun while I teach as I was able to communicate on my students’ level. I found it challenging at the beginning as I searched for the fine line between having fun with the students and managing the class effectively. I learned that clear expectations were crucial. When students and I are on the same page, we can learn and have fun within the expectations. Moreover, I enjoy creating lessons and materials that are relevant to the students’ life; whether it is a PowerPoint slide with photos taken from students’ local community or creating a situation that students actually care about when discussing the importance of rules. Lastly, my mentors and colleagues appreciated the regular communication throughout my practicum whether it was to discuss the shape of the day or adaptation for certain students. I learned that communication was key in order to best assist students in their learning.
In contrast, I also have plans to work on certain skill sets. I am currently pursuing my TESOL certificate as I have noticed the high number of ELL students within my practicum district. Having taken my first course for the certificate has given insight as to why ELL students have trouble with certain pronunciation and their challenges when understanding native speakers. In addition to the TESOL certificate, I plan to gain more classroom experience through volunteering in classrooms. I find that the things you learn by spending time in the classroom are irreplaceable; they are often the most practical. Lastly, my long term goal is to pursue my Master’s degree in the near future. I hope to broaden my perspective as a teacher and continue to learn along with my students and colleagues.
