Project Descriptions

Ceramics 9/10: Thumb Pot Movie Characters
For this project, we made miniature thumb pots based off of the pinch pot technique. By focusing on a small size, students were able to hone their skills on details. We used our favorite movie characters as a source of inspiration and an idea to either replicate or depart from. Having an idea bank of animated movie characters to work from allowed for the creativity to flow, and a ceramic expression of both geometric and organic forms.

Ceramics 11/12: Past, Present, Future
Using ceramic methods and techniques learned throughout the year, students explore change within various subject areas over time. Each student determined an area of focus for their project, and examined it through the past, present and future. Looking at how technology has changed over time, growth and decay, and other industries such as music, fashion etc., students have begun creating work to represent the past and present, which is displayed here in progress.

Art 8: Print Making
Printmaking is the process of making artwork by printing, normally on paper, using a roller and ink. Students came up with an idea of a place they like to be most, drew it in their sketchbooks, and created a scratched foam surface to use as their printing blocks. They learned about editions, signing and titling, while having fun making an addition of two prints.

Art 8: Bookbinding
Within this unit, students explored journaling, cartooning, collaging, printmaking and the art of bookbinding. Working from a theme of storytelling and introducing the self, students produced an array of works, learning different skill sets that are all bound within these books. The bind chosen for this book is known as a side stitch, in which the yarn is exposed, not on the seam of the book but rather along the side.

Art 11/12: Appropriation
Our mini unit on appropriation explored the works of Andy Warhol, Vik Muniz and Tom Wesselmann among other artists, and the way in which each of the artists appropriated work from either other artists or popular culture. Working collaboratively, this class each was given a square on a grid to enlarge and appropriate using any coloured medium of their choice, while staying true to the colours on the original photograph.

Art 9: Environmentalism
Starting the unit with brainstorming, continuing onto the documentary Wasteland starring South American artist Vik Muniz, students brought in recycled objects from home and worked collaboratively to create found object sculptures. Working in a conceptual way, students created presentations and artist statements about their collective projects.
