Discussion & Future Inquiries

The aim of my inquiry was to explore how to cultivate a positive classroom climate with a specific focus on fostering a student-centred approach.  I have reviewed and research various resources not limiting to books, article journals, blogs, teachers’ websites and TED talks without counting the exhaustive lists of important classroom skills which has a huge influence on student academic outcomes. My research also led me to review other relevant areas of study such as psychology, philosophy and sociology.

While I still feel that I don’t have all the answers to my inquiry but there are two important findings.  First, it has led me to wonder if intrinsic motivation would be one of the components in building a positive classroom climate and how it could contribute to the success of a positive classroom? Therefore, further research into intrinsic motivation and other areas may broaden my and other educators’ views and understanding.  Second, through this research, numerous reports have re-emphasized the valuable insights I have gained through this process as to what it means to be an effective teacher. It also underscores that having the right knowledge and in-depth understanding of all the different components and concepts is crucial for setting up that safe, trusting, understanding, and harmonious classroom so that I can be an effective teacher for my students.  My ‘aha’ moment is realizing my students’ well-being comes before academic learning.  With a supportive and healthy environment, students will thrive in their own ways leading to academic success which will have a long-term impact on them as adults with relationships, career, mental wellbeing, and character as a socially responsible person.

Finally, I have reached the end of my inquiry project with some questions answered and many unanswered.  At the same time through my inquiry, other inquiry questions rose during my research and those are worth further research into at a later time.

All the things I’ve mentioned in my blog I will test and implement in my practicum school and in my future practice as a teacher.

Question for all Teacher Candidates and educators…

How will you work towards building that classroom climate to ensure all learners are well supported?
