How do I promote/foster a positive classroom climate for diverse learners?
This project inquires around a theme of “How do I promote/foster a positive classroom climate for diverse learners”. I am placed in a grade 1/2 classroom for my practicum, where the students have diverse skills, struggles, family issues, medical challenges, socio-economic, cultural backgrounds and academic struggles.
The term “diverse learners” evokes the image of students who are learning disabled (Holland, 2006). This is an outdated mindset. Every student in the classroom is unique with their strengths and weaknesses (Holland, 2006). Each student has a unique way of learning and an unusual way of expressing what she has learned (Holland, 2006).
The classroom environment is one of the most critical aspects affecting student learning (Mitchell & Bradshaw, 2013). Students learn better and are more engaged in a supportive learning environment (Myers, Freeman, Simonsen, & Sugai, 2017). The teacher needs to be aware that she is responsible for creating a positive classroom climate, and it just does not happen (Mariani, Sink, Villares, & Berger, 2019). The teacher has to be intentional and deliberately shape the climate of the classroom into a positive learning environment.
