Medieval Bread Baking

I participated in a UBC Orchard Garden workshop last Saturday in preparation for my Community Field Experience in June.  We brushed and winnowed the wheat that was grown in the garden and then ground it to bake it into bread.

2. Winnowing (getting rid of all the light, fluffy casings) — break the head of the wheat off the stem and roll between hands. The chaf is lighter and can be blown out of the bowl  to separate from the grain.

This workshop involved learning new vocabulary, song and dance, eating our delicious bread and a little medieval history lesson! I am looking forward to spending three weeks learning about how to teach and learn in gardens.
