Visual Journals: blending art and science
During my practicum, I implemented the use of a visual journal in my Montessori grade 4/5/6 classroom. The journals were introduced as a way to blend art and science and consolidate learning. They were a place for questions, wonders, understanding, illustrations, interesting newspaper articles… Anything really that would promote critical thinking and spark discussion in our weekly gallery walks. Students demonstrated an impressive range of creativity, critical thinking and looked forward to sharing their favourite pages.
I introduced this project by sharing my visual journal with the students. I will continue to use my visual journal as a place to keep my wonders, questions, and understandings.
