Hello _________ (insert your preferred name here),
I am (Wait! Wouldn’t you know who I am if you are reading my blog, my professional blog? Anyway, let me start over. [skip the paraphrases when you read this again]) Kelly Lui, a graduated student who is currently undergoing University of British Columbia’s Education program. Basically, I am learning to become a teacher, a professional Secondary School teacher. I graduated with a Bachelor Arts degree (major in English Literature and minor in Sociology) in 2013. BINGO! I am teaching English and ESL. Did I mention I have obtained the TESEL certificate? That’s right! I did in the spring of 2013. I think that is enough of me rambling about my education background.
Something that you should know about me is the fact that I am bilingual or even a little bit of trilingual (is that even a term? I guess so since I haven’t gotten that red scribbly thing underlining it). I was born in Hong Kong and grew up there until I was grade ten. Please don’t judge me. I am proud of myself and for where I come from. I believe that my experiences can be beneficial as a teacher because I can totally relate to my ESL students’ struggles. I know how frustrating it can be like to be placed in the ESL program when you may be one of the top students back in home. It is okay. We are going to get through that phrase. One of my passions/ future missions is to help students be comfortable and confident with their identities as ESL students. It is nothing wrong with that label; it is how people react to the label. “Oh, you are an ESL student. I do not think we can communicate.” “Your pronunciation sucks!” “You have a weird accent!” NO! NO! NO! All of us need to learn to accept and respect one another! Hopefully, everyone can learn to appreciate each other. That is my goal.
