Hi All,
Today we looked at a bunch of different articles, statistics, video clips, and spoken poetry connecting what Billie Holiday wrote in “Strange Fuits” in 1939 (nearly 78 years ago) and “The Hanging Tree” from The Hunger Games (which was inspired by Holiday’s song– as was Kanye West’s “Blood on the Leaves” )with our modern 2017 world. We talked about the injustice of mass incarceration of African American men and the overwhelming statistics (found here:America has locked up so many black people it has warped our sense of reality) and discussed how Canada is not immune to racism and how racism hides its ugly face in covert, hidden ways in our everyday lives (read this article: ADRIENNE CLARKSON article for more).
