Goal
General: The integration of place-based learning to promote inquiry among students while making connections with nature and the local community.
- To integrate multi-modal and place-based educational experiences for students, where learning takes place in and outside of the classroom and allows students to wander, inquire, and express themselves through various means.
- To connect students with the greater community and local environment.
Areas of Focus
General: The following applies to number 1 above.
- Utilize various methods of teaching, such as technology, oral storytelling, collaborative projects and inquiry-based assignments.
- Implement lessons outside of the classroom, such as in the library, outdoors, and local landmarks in the community.
- Utilize manipulatives in my teaching practice to promote hands-on learning and expression of learning through various means.
General: The following applies to number 2 above.
- Incorporate First Nations pedagogies of learning such as storytelling, connections with nature, and encouraging an appreciation of the interconnectedness of the world.
- Implement a weekly “current events” program, which will allow students to learn about local news and their contributions to the local community as citizens.
- Participation in local events, such as athletics, charities, and collaboration with other schools.
Activities
- Invite an Elder from a local First Nations community to share their stories, experiences, and traditions.
- Field trip to local park, which will allow students to learn in an outdoor setting and connect with nature.
- Create a class team for the Sun Run, or participate in the “Adopt a Street” program.
