Friday, February 5, 2016. Today is the end of the first week of practicum, and overall I am having a great time. I got a taste for what the daily routine of a teacher is like, including doing attendance, entering marks, and keeping track of students who need a make-up lab because they will be away for the science fair. I also got to know the students in my two grade eight foods classes a lot better. I almost have everyone’s names down, so that’s a plus! On the other hand, I caught the cold on Thursday, and had to stay at home today. I am a little worried about getting sick so early in the practicum, but I hope this means I will be healthier for the rest of my 10-week journey. For now, I will focus on recovering during the long weekend with a bowl of chicken noodle soup.
What surprised you (either positively or negatively) about your first week of practicum and why was it such a surprise?
I was surprised at how many little details and tasks I had to keep track of—and this was only at a 20% load! I am a “big picture” thinker, meaning that I create an outline of my day and expect it to flow somewhat as I have planned, leaving a little room for flexibility. I have learned this week that I should really be leaving a lot more breathing room. Certain students need lessons and activities adapted, and sometimes half your class will be absent for a science fair. I am making sure students are being safe and using correct techniques during labs, while jotting down notes as formative assessment, while answering questions, and while making sure their flour bins are full. I did not realize that I had to keep track of so many details at once. I think I am surprised to be feeling a little overwhelmed in this way because a) other teachers make it seem like it is easy, and b) perhaps I am juggling too many tasks at once. I hope to soon be able to work out the timing of my lessons and my days so that I feel more at ease.
