{"id":121,"date":"2007-09-08T14:15:21","date_gmt":"2007-09-08T21:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/m1.cust.educ.ubc.ca:16080\/tsedgrad\/?page_id=121"},"modified":"2019-11-03T07:35:30","modified_gmt":"2019-11-03T14:35:30","slug":"stephen-petrina-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mtse\/people\/faculty\/stephen-petrina-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Stephen Petrina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/edcp.educ.ubc.ca\/faculty-staff\/stephen-petrina\/\">Stephen Petrina<\/a> is a Professor (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/mtse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MTSE<\/a>) in the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edcp.educ.ubc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy<\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>at the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of British Columbia<\/a>. He\u00a0specializes in Media and Technology Studies (MTS), Science and Technology Studies (STS), Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education (STEM), Design and Technology Education (D&amp;T), and of course Curriculum Studies. He is\u00a0a Fellow in the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/instituteforpubliceducation.org\/about\/ipebc-fellows\/\">Institute for Public Education BC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For over a decade, Stephen and an amazing team of colleagues &amp; graduate researchers have been focusing on<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/howwelearn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how we learn media &amp; technology across the lifespan. HWL focuses especially on<\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>how children, youth, and adults innovate in classrooms, labs, workshops, makerspaces, virtual spaces, home spaces, and workplaces. As a team of environmental activists, we also research learning by ecodesign and natural spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen has recently published in the\u00a0<em>Journal of Military History<\/em>, <em>European Journal of STEM Education<\/em>, <em>Hacking Education in a Digital Age<\/em>, <em>Critique in Design and Technology Education<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>British Journal of Educational Technology<\/em>. Forthcoming publications will appear in the <em>Handbook of Mobile Teaching and Learning<\/em>, <em>An International Perspective on Pedagogy for Technology Education in Secondary Schools<\/em>, and <em>Vitae Scholasticae: The Journal of Educational Biography<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>At this time (October 2019), he is focusing on philosophy of media &amp; technology for children &amp; youth. Stephen&#8217;s expertise\u00a0necessarily\u00a0includes the philosophy of media &amp; technology and the philosophy of research, as opposed to methodology.<\/p>\n<p>Awarded $2.4m in competitive research grants and contracts to date, three current grants are indicative of funding awards, most of which support graduate research assistants and underwrite infrastructure: (SSHRC IG, \u201cHWL\u201d @ $371,406; SSHRC IDG, \u201cCritique of M&amp;T\u201d @ $40,033; Mitacs, \u201cSmart Learning System\u201d @ $180,000). Stephen is a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cooltoolswarmworld.ubc.ca\/?login\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cool Tools cluster for climate change education<\/a> ($1m+).<\/p>\n<p>He has authored or co-authored 120 publications, including 43 Refereed Articles, 14 Refereed Proceedings, 32 Scholarly Responses and Non-Refereed Publications, 2 Books, and 29 Book Chapters, in addition to dozens of technical reports.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen has supervised 140 graduate students, including 13 Ph.D. students, to completion and is current Supervisor of 6 doctoral and masters students. He has also served as Supervisor of 7 Postdoctoral students and mentor to a range of faculty members.
