Businesses need to find ways to engage their employees and \u2018make a difference\u2019 beyond that which comes from a monetary donation.\u00a0 Jim Gibbon\u2019s Goodwill Industries (Goodwill) provides an interesting model for businesses who are serious about corporate citizenship. In a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hbr.org\/cs\/2011\/10\/the_good_business_model_at_goo.html\">Harvard Business Review Blog<\/a>, Gibbons highlights the importance of his company\u2019s business model and how others can leverage, or learn from it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_141\" style=\"width: 304px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/nadiag\/files\/2011\/11\/Jim-Gibbons-Goodwill-Blog1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-141\" title=\"Jim Gibbons-Goodwill Blog\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/nadiag\/files\/2011\/11\/Jim-Gibbons-Goodwill-Blog1-294x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/nadiag\/files\/2011\/11\/Jim-Gibbons-Goodwill-Blog1-294x300.jpg 294w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/nadiag\/files\/2011\/11\/Jim-Gibbons-Goodwill-Blog1.jpg 588w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 294px) 100vw, 294px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-141\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jim Gibbons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Goodwill believes that a strong economy is based on employment. \u00a0Goodwill provides job training for those who are challenged in finding work thereby \u201cempowering individuals in the community [they] serve\u201d. \u00a0Goodwill sells donated goods through its retail outlets \u201cand uses the revenues to fund job-training and placement programs in communities\u201d. \u00a0Gibbons says that this model \u201c[puts] social good at the center\u201d of its business.<\/p>\n<p>Engaging with Goodwill through employee driven goods donations, volunteering and monetary support, a company can reduce goods going to landfills, help support a respected charity and at the same time provide job training at a community level.
