My name is Natalie and I am a fourth-year student at UBC majoring in Political Science. While I have enjoyed my undergraduate studies, I am anxious to complete my degree and move on to my next venture. I was recently accepted to study Law at Oxford University in England, and I am very much looking forward to moving and beginning my studies in Jurisprudence. I hope to specialize in International Law, particularly on cases related to the European Union, but am also captivated by Human Rights Law. If you are interested in learning more about my personal legal heroes Philippa Southwell and Amal Clooney, please click here and here.
While I am taking six courses this semester, I am also employed at Urban Outfitters as a sales associate. I have found this position to be very rewarding and, oftentimes, quite fun, especially since I am very interested in fashion (I also have my own personal blog in which I write, essentially, about clothes). Though I don’t intend to pursue retail as a career, I have enjoyed my time at Urban and hope to continue moving up the ladder there as I complete my studies.
Interests and Hobbies
I love to travel and visited every continent (except Antarctica!) by the time I was 20 years old. I have
lived in Canada, Australia, and England for extended time periods, and will soon be relocating to the UK permanently. This is very exciting to me as it will make it that much easier to travel to Europe and Africa!
I also love to read and write, particularly personal essays and short stories. Throughout my degree I’ve managed to squeeze in creative writing and English classes whenever possible – though they tend to be writing and reading intensive, they always seem more like fun than work!
As I mentioned before, I also love fashion, music, and art. Any rare day off I have from school or work is generally spent at galleries and concerts. This is a big part of the reason that I like big cities: there is never any shortage of fine art to take in. After Oxford, I hope to make my permanent home in London, where theatre, live music, and museums abound.
Aspirations
After graduating from Oxford, I hope to qualify as a Barrister and practice Law in London, UK. The city is central in International Human Rights Law, which is the field that I hope to pursue. I would love to find a job that allowed me to work not only in the UK, but in Europe, Africa, Asia, and beyond. I want to work towards a partnership in a Law firm, which I know will take a lot of effort and time to achieve. I also want to work with Lawyers Without Borders to give back using my training.
In my personal life, I want to stay healthy both mentally and physically through exercise and relaxation. The career path that I have chosen is known for being strenuous, but I hope to make my body and mind my first priority. I believe that if I’m healthy and happy, I will be able to perform better at my job. Lastly, I want to own my own home in London – a goal that might take a lifetime to achieve due to housing prices, but I am determined to get there nonetheless!
