Hello, my name is Natalie.
I am a Bachelors of Computer Science Second Degree (BCS) student at the University of British Columbia. I hit my first professional milestone when I completed my Bachelors of Arts Degree in Psychology at UBC in 2014. Since then, I work at Rogers Communications (Fido Solutions) as a retail wireless sales and customer service representative.
After graduating with the psychology degree, I spent a few years soul searching and had a realization: although I am extremely interested in studying the human mind, I cannot envision myself contributing to the world as a psychologist like I used to (or perhaps I am simply unwillingness to go through a long, gruelling post-graduate degree ride to get there).
Fortunately, I was able to discover a new interest in computer science through interactions with customers while working at Fido retail stores. My primary responsibilities at work include demonstrating mobile devices and resolving any issues that arise from their use. I see firsthand how many people, old and young, still struggle with using phone applications and navigating through the operating systems of their mobile devices. I realize that while technology is advancing at a tremendous pace, there is much work needed to bridge the gap between people and the available technology.
By combining my psychology background with new learnings of computer science from the BCS program, I aim to be part of the movement that strengthens human-technology interactions, thus bringing more user-friendly technologies into the world. I am excited for what English 301 has to offer to guide me in presenting myself and my ideas to help change the world.
