The following information should be recorded at the site if available:<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-557 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/nextgen\/files\/2022\/01\/label-1-278x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"319\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/nextgen\/files\/2022\/01\/label-1-278x300.jpg 278w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/nextgen\/files\/2022\/01\/label-1.jpg 282w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Scientific Name:<\/strong> Species name (binomial that includes genus and specific epithet).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Location:<\/strong> Country, Province (State), general description of the route you took to get there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Geolocation:<\/strong> Latitude and longitude (GPS marker).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Elevation:<\/strong> Elevation in meters (m) or feet (ft).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> A description of the surrounding habitat, vegetation type,\u00a0soil type, slope aspect and any associated species you can identify (Ex: \u2018Coastal Douglas Fir forest, understory <em>Polystichum munitum <\/em>(sword fern)\u2019 or \u2018disturbed road side of HWY 99).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Collector(s):<\/strong> YOU! \u2013 and any others collectors who are with you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Collector\u2019s number:<\/strong> This is your unique numerical identifier for this specific specimen you have collected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Date Collected:<\/strong> The date the specimen was collected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Notes:<\/strong> Anything interesting about the specimen you are collecting; colour of flower, smell, height of plant, any unique features, number of individuals you see, visiting pollinators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Date Identified:<\/strong> The date the specimen was identified.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Determined by:<\/strong> Who identified the specimen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Additional Comments: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Scientific Name<\/strong>: Sometimes other levels of taxonomic hierarchy are added such as Family or Order.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Location:<\/strong> Do not use location descriptions that can change easily over time (Ex: corner gas station on corner of 4<sup>th<\/sup> Street and Alder Drive &#8211; in 100 years we might not have gas stations anymore!).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Geolocation:<\/strong> Record GPS datum (NAD 27 or NAD 83) and distance error in reading due to triangulation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Collector(s):<\/strong> Full name please, as this is for history! Many people have the same name so if you want credit for your collection, please give your full name.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Collector\u2019s number:<\/strong> Make sure this number stays unique and sequential. It is common to add your initials before the number in order to make sure it stays unique to you!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Date Collected:<\/strong> Use three letter acronyms for the months, Mar, Apr, May so not to confused day and month and always all 4 numbers for the year (2020).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Date Identified:<\/strong> Often the date identified is later than the collection date as you might need to refer to more references before you confirm identification.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><strong>Determined by:<\/strong> Often this will be different than the collector, as many specimens are difficult to identify and need an experts eye.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Specimen and Collector Information Accompanying specimen and collector information is essential for scientific research.
