Conclusion

While our analysis considers a wide range of factors in attempts to provide a relatively accurate representation of the LA County population and region, it is by no means conclusive. There are many socioeconomic and environmental factors that were not taken into consideration in our analysis which could very easily differentiate our results. The assignment of transformations on data sets and weighting are also quite subjective processes which introduces additional ambiguity. However, with those stipulations in mind, our assessment is that the Metro NextGen Bus Plan succeeds in improving bus service in regions needing public transportation development.

Future studies may wish to consider a more in-depth analysis of service expansions across off-peak times and weekends, particularly as a goal of the NextGen expansion was to provide expanded service during the middle of the day to facilitate transit use for shorter trips (Metro, 2020). Additionally, the inclusion of data on race and ethnicity would provide an additional dimension to socioeconomic considerations, particularly given the especially diverse natures of the expansion regions identified through the MCE. Ultimately, our final regions map functions better as a starting place for further exploration than it would as an authoritative guide to best transit development regions.
