Music and Ethics

Tagore, one of the greatest poets of the world, said: “Music is the purest form of art, and therefore the most direct expression of beauty.” Music is always so wonderful, so pleasant that no one can resist falling in love with it. However, when music is concerned with people’s self interest and financial benefits in the music world (that we should now call “music industry”), it can no longer be as pure as we assumed. Can artists actually make the music they love for their loyal fans (or simply just music lovers)? Can artists freely show the world all the hard work and efforts they spend days and nights in recording studios and training rooms? The answer is NO.

There are entertainment agencies who continuously “manipulate” the music world. Music shouldn’t be regarded as money making tool. Artists mustn’t be treated unfairly. Companies must not use their power to conduct tricks and illicit affairs, just as “business should be engaged in open and free competition without deception or fraud” (“The Social Responsibility of Business is to increase its profit” – Milton Friedman). Music industry, or business, needs all the responsibility and ethics of not only individuals but also corporations.
