Unit Two Reflections: LinkedIn Research, Formal Report Progress, Peer Review

The assignments in unit two were very engaging. My writing has improved immensely from the feedback that I have received by completing these assignments. Overall, unit two was more challenging than unit one, but it has been the most beneficial to my professional writing skills.

LinkedIn Research

Shortly before enrolling in English 301, I created a LinkedIn page for myself. I have used this page to connect with my past employers, have an online version of my resume, and search for internships. I now recognize the importance of LinkedIn in the professional world. Researching the best practices for professional use of LinkedIn has been beneficial to my current profile. I used my research to enhance my profile and improve my presence on LinkedIn. This assignment has also taught me how to properly compose a memo that presents research findings. After reading Dr. Paterson’s blog on avoiding imperative verbs, I improved my memo before submitting the final version. Overall, this process helped me develop a stronger LinkedIn profile and write informative memos.

Formal Report Progress

After working at Piquant Gourmet Specialties for two years, I knew that Piquant would benefit from a website. With my experience in computer science, I had a vague idea and plan of approach for this topic. The assignments and feedback from unit two have helped refine my ideas and develop an informative report proposal. After receiving suggestions from Dr. Paterson, I included a survey for the general public on their use of business websites. This data will be informative to my audience, and will help guide my further research. I am pleased with how the report is progressing, and I am confident that the final report will address the needs of the target audience.

David’s Peer Review Of My Proposal

David’s peer review of my proposal provided constructive feedback. As I sometimes struggle with proper grammar, it is helpful to have my work peer reviewed. David gave me useful suggestions on how to improve my report, specifically for the parts with improper grammar. David also provided me with positive feedback, which has been very helpful in knowing my writing strengths.  After receiving comments from Dr. Paterson, I revisited my proposal’s statement of problem and noticed an emphasis on the negative aspect of Piquant not owning a website. During my revision, I rewrote that section to emphasize the positive effects of small business websites. Overall, receiving feedback for my report has been invaluable, and I will use these suggestions for my future writings.

Peer Review Process

Reading David’s report proposal on Improving Theft Prevention at Costco was engaging. It was interesting to learn about the issues Costco faces with theft, and David did an excellent job at highlighting this. The first time I read David’s proposal, my feedback was limited. But, after considerable time and deliberation, I was able to provide thoughtful feedback to David. Furthermore, Dr. Paterson provided useful criticism on my peer review. After reading the example of a peer review for a report, I found several sections of my peer review that lacked detail; this is something I will improve on for my next peer review. By providing constructive criticism to David, I found mistakes that were present in my own writing. Overall, the peer review process has helped me refine my professional writing and self-editing skills.
