Unit Three Reflections: Formal Report and Peer Review Process

Unit 3 has been an intense learning experience. Using the you-attitude to emphasize the reader’s needs was the central focus of this unit. The assignments were more difficult to complete in unit 3, and the due dates came quickly. Overall, this unit has been extremely practical to my writing and peer reviewing skills.

Formal Report Process

Gathering data for both my primary and secondary sources was a challenge. I found that it was more difficult than I expected to find and use appropriate secondary sources, and determine which information would best strengthen my argument. Nonetheless, I am happy to put the time and effort into researching this topic. Not only does this research help my reader, but I have also gained an understanding of the web development process. Being a computer scientist, this is an area I would like to explore when finding a career.

Writing and organizing the report was the most enjoyable part of this process. After all the data collected, I had to determine how to present it effectively; this required using the techniques I had learned throughout the semester, such as using a positive tone, avoiding imperative verbs, and adding the necessary detail. Writing this report allowed me to refine these skills.

I initially underestimated the amount of work that was required, so the final report draft was difficult to complete. While I managed to finish it on time, the report draft was not polished. So, my time allocation is something I will improve for my next assignment.

Peer Review Process

Reviewing Harvey’s final report draft for improving check-in procedures at the North Delta Recreation Centre was challenging. The most difficult aspect in writing this peer review was making thoughtful and useful recommendations for Harvey. Based on the feedback I received on my last peer review, I added more details to this peer review and immediately noticed better results. As the you-attitude is an important element to persuasive reports, I focused on identifying examples where Harvey could improve the tone of the report. Writing this peer review also allowed me to improve my own skills in writing with a you-attitude. Harvey’s report was concise and well-written, so it was a great opportunity to improve my peer reviewing skills. Furthermore, writing a peer review for Harvey’s report gave me insight on the improvements I can make to my own report.

The skills I gained by completing the assignments in unit 3 are invaluable. I am looking forward to seeing how my report can be improved by reading Harvey’s peer review.
