Week 6 – Task 6

Task 6: An emoji story

Reflection

This was a fun task that stretched my creativity into new areas that I haven’t previously explored. This activity reminds me of a task I provided my high school English students in the past which was to convert their favorite scene from Romeo and Juliet into “modern teen language with as many emojis as possible”. I now see why this was one of their favorite assignments.

I relied heavily on expressing ideas rather than words. I chose to do the chapter titles for all the chapters in the book that I chose and when I attempted to do it based on the recommendations from Siri I failed miserably. Many of the words did not have direct emoji’s associated with them. For example the word “Lottery”. There’s no emoji directly relating to that, but the idea of a “lottery ticket” came to mind and there is an emoji for tickets. This was difficult, but made the outcome much stronger than if I had tried to use only words or syllables.

I did start with the title for this book, I thought that would be a good place to start and a good way to engage my brain in this unfamiliar way of thinking and creating. I chose this book because it was sitting beside me on my couch as I was completing this week’s readings. I have about 20 pages left but thought I was close enough for it to be considered one of the texts I have recently completed. It also directly relates to my current situation of living in Japan and so thought it would be fun to go through the process.

I put the emojis directly into Word Press but once I saved the page the majority of them turned into ???’s. I have therefore attached an image of the emojis below instead.
