I chose to link with Patrick’s activity as I believe he did an excellent job of taking the Twine Task to a level beyond the expectations of the course. Patrick’s Twine is creative, and incorporates visual elements that he created with the assistance of AI. This was not something I thought about doing for my task and did not realize was even possible to do with Twine.
As explored by Zaltzman (2019), technology is now incorporating audio-visual methods of communication such as images and emojis, something previous text formats were unable to do. Zaltzman and her guest suggest that these images and emojis are used to “clarify, convey, or change the intentions of the words they accompany” (7:55). Patrick’s Twine is a great example of how we can use images to enhance text communication and provide clarity, emotion, and context, in a way that text by itself cannot.
While Patrick struggled to embed his images into the Twine itself, it is evident that this would be an effective addition to the adventure he created. By going through his Twine without the images, one is left to develop their own characters, environment, and story, however with the images provided it helps in fleshing out this world he has created and provides the viewer with a more holistic impression of what the author, Patrick, wished to create.
What I take away from this link is that we must always think about the information we are communicating and the medium we are using to convey it. Text by itself may be enough for an email, but when we are sharing complex ideas, perhaps adding additional support such as images, audio, or even video can help us be more effective communicators. The next question is, how much time and energy should one dedicate to adding these additional supports? How do we determine when it is necessary to spend the extra time and energy into developing these materials? With practice and experience, I believe we can learn when, and to what extent we should add additional materials to our communication to be effective in our work and learning.
