Peer Perfection – Deborah’s Emoji Story

Apparently, I am not fluent in emojis. Deborah’s TV show was “The Mayfair Witches.”

I now have a newfound appreciation for anthropologists and those who have studied ancient writings. Like me, Deborah found it difficult to find emojis that would suitably convey the plot she was trying to tell us, but I can see how they support the ability to convey the tone one is “speaking” in via text. With the ever-increasing use of emails,  texts or other instant messaging apps and collaboration tools, it is easy to misread the tone of the communication. It may be a result of your mood, your opinion of the other person or any other number of reasons. The fact of the matter is that World War III could start as a result of Trudeau not putting a smiley face emoji at the end of a text to Biden or Trump or Putin or whoever else runs a country in this world.

This exercise would be a great one to complete in management and leadership training to show that while you may know exactly what you are saying, others in the room may not understand, and you need to speak in a way that everyone will listen and learn. Perhaps as a group exercise, the group is given an emoji title to identify with an observer watching how the group interacts, collaborates, or seeks to listen to the perspectives of others – I may have to play around with this!
