The purpose of this study is to show change of housing affordability in Vancouver. I conducted a study between four different classification methods for displaying Housing Affordability in Vancouver. From this analysis, I’ve learned the advantages and purpose of each method.

For natural breaks, it is classified through grouping similar values together. It is the default in GIS.

For equal intervals, it is splitting the dataset into 5 equal portions. While this might be useful if there is a normal distribution of data, it wasn’t suitable for looking at housing affordability in Vancouver.

For standard deviation, it shows how far each census tracts deviate from the main concentration of data. I don’t think this is appropriate for this analysis because it does not clearly communicate the price of housing to buyers.

I believe the manual breaks display is most appropriate. Although I am not comparing two sets of data, this display can be tailored to the buyer’s budget.
