Nike chosen as ‘top ethical company’.

In 2010, the website http://www.ethisphere.com released a list of companies that were found, by government officials, attorneys and professors, to be the ‘most ethical’ of the year. Listed in the apparel category was Nike. Nike, who I thought was still importing their goods from sweatshops in Southeast Asia, made it on the list of most ethical companies? I assumed the company would have changed their ways to make it onto that list, but no – Nike is still paying their workers $4, or in some countries $2.50 per day while they work around the clock. Jim Keady, mentioned in this blog, has been hard at work trying to persuade Nike to treat its workers fairly for over thirteen years, and agrees with me in my opinion: if a business is blindly trying to increase profits without consideration to the workers, it is an entirely unethical practice. So, how did Nike make the list of most ethical companies for 2010? As it turns out, the companies who want to be considered for the list actually have to submit an application. And while this is solely speculation, I would bet a nice cheque was attached to the application sent in by Nike.
