Me

I am an arts student at UBC and recently decided to major in geography, in the environment and sustainability program. After two years of haphazardly navigating my way through the arts, I finally figured out that geography is the area of study that suits me best. It encompasses a little bit of all the courses I most enjoyed taking: sociology, anthropology, history, GRSJ. I discovered that geography is not all about traveling, or being able to name every country or capital in the world (I am not keen on doing either of these things). Rather, studying geography makes me consider the complex ways in which different parts of the world are connected, and what these connections mean for people and for the environment. I believe strongly in justice, for all humans as well as for the planet. It was my first year sociology class that really made me think about the effects of my consumption on other people in the world, and just how unfairly certain industries function. And it was a geography class about modernization and globalization that made me further consider how globalization has changed the way the world works. I want to continue learning about root causes of human and environmental injustices, so that I may be better equipped to make positive change.
