Below are examples that my grade ten students gave as pros and cons for the use of Indian mascots and names in sports:

Pros:

-honours Aboriginal people and their culture

-demonstrates pride

-many Aboriginal individuals surveyed have stated that they are okay with the use of Indian names and mascots

Cons:

-racist images

-showcase Indians as “savages”

-leads to stereotyping of Aboriginal peoples
