With\u00a0patients, this means helping them make choices that are\u00a0informed by best clinical evidence, personal values, and in the context of available resources. In a recent blog by Healthy Debate, <a href=\"http:\/\/healthydebate.ca\/2015\/01\/topic\/quality\/decision-aids\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Decision aids: why hasn\u2019t this proven, patient-centred practice caught on?&#8221;<\/a>, the authors discuss the role of decision aids in helping patients make more informed decisions about their care.\u00a0My thesis explores decision-making for vaginal birth after caesarean, so the questions posed in the article are of great relevance and interest to me.<\/p>\n<p>Decision aids have been developed in maternity care for a range of preference-sensitive decisions, from choice of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.havingababy.org.au\/media\/pdf\/choicesepidural.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">epidural<\/a>,\u00a0to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcri.edu.au\/Downloads\/PrenatalTestingDecisionAid.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">prenatal genetic screening<\/a>, to <a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/medicine\/public-health\/shdg\/docs\/Breech_DA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">external cephalic version<\/a> for breech presentation.\u00a0While these tools have been shown to increase knowledge and\u00a0help patients gain\u00a0clarity about what matters to them,\u00a0they have not been widely implemented.
