The Department of Linguistics at the University of British Columbia is pleased to host the Northwest Linguistics Conference from May 5-7, 2017 in Vancouver, BC. We invite graduate and undergraduate students to submit abstracts for 30 minute talks (20 minutes for presentation + 10 minutes for discussion) in any area of theoretical or applied linguistics, or for the presentation of a poster.<\/p>\n
Invited Speaker: Emily Elfner (UBC)<\/p>\n
This year we will have two special themed sessions:<\/p>\n
(1) Intersection of sociology and linguistics: This session broadly welcomes papers that explore the connection between grammar and the social aspects of speech communities.
\nSession 1 Plenary Speaker: TBD<\/p>\n
(2) Intersection of cognition and linguistics: This session welcomes papers that explore issues of first- and second-language acquisition, processing, and multimodality.
\nSession 2 Plenary Speaker: TBD<\/p>\n
Abstracts must be at most two pages long (including data and references), on a letter-size sheet (8\u201d1\/2 by 11\u201d) with 1″ margins, and typed in at least 12-point font. Abstracts that do not follow the above format will not be accepted. Submissions are limited to 1 individual and 1 joint abstract per author. We especially encourage abstracts related to one of the two special sessions outlined above, although research in all areas of linguistics is welcome.<\/p>\n

Please indicate if you would like to be considered for a poster, a talk or both.\u00a0<\/span>Deadline for submissions is now January 27, 2017 (it was originally January, 13th), with replies to be sent by March 10, 2017.<\/p>\n The Northwest Linguistics Conference is an annual conference for graduate students in linguistics to share their work in a friendly atmosphere, and meet colleagues from other universities, both locally and internationally.
