If the United Nations was fully funded why would we need the Arc or social enterprise

If  the United Nations was fully funded why would we need the Arc or social enterprise?

Social entrepreneurship aim to solve the social problem, like education, children health, housing, clean water, and climate change mentioned in the video. And the innovations are the most promising solution to global problem. To accomplish the goal of innovation, a small company should extend their reach, deepen their impact, so that the society can be improved fundamentally.

Providing enough funds are necessary. Everything we do to improve the society need funding. However, funding is not enough to reach its goal. The knowledge, the social experience cannot be brought by money. Generating social value is one of the goal of social entrepreneurship, and wealth creation is not an end, promoting systemic social change is the real objection. The result from social enterprise is the production of measurable return, which means to transform existing realities, open up new pathway, unlock society’s potential of effect social change.

The Arc program is a successful case of social entrepreneurship. It gathers some of the knowledgeable and professional person to provide guidance to the small company in South America. Their valuable advice lead to the success of many small companies like Salem’s Ethiopia, Shega Shero and Osei Duro. After attending the workshop held by Arc program, they were able to find the best ways to operate their company and they established a successful company finally.

In conclusion, social entrepreneurship involves providing funds, as well as business knowledges and experiences. To become successful in transforming the society, the most important factor we should be taken into account is innovation.

External blog-Creating a Culture of Fun: 7 Employee Gift Ideas

The blog shows how important the employee’s motivation is. If a company’s employee lose their motive to work, it is difficult for a company to become successful. When a new employee enter an organization, there is a period of time where individual will be very active. This is not because of their knowledge or their responsibility but the human nature. You enter a new position, you will work very hard to build your reputation. After a few years, you will become lazier than before and a downward trend begins in term of productivity and efficiency. Therefore, the leader of the team should do something to prevent the decreasing productivity from happening. All the leader should do is to keep his employee dynamic. Giving a gift during holidays or some special events can provide them a sense of belonging which can encourage them to work harder and improve their efficiency.

However, building a close relationship among employee is costly. For instance, to throw a party for holiday, you should rent a place, order food and drink, buy gift……These thing may cost a lot. Some greedy employee may take advantage of it and take away a lot of food.

Even though it may cost a lot, It is still have a lot of advantage of being concerned with our employee. If we create a sense of belonging within employee, and they all enjoy working here, and the productivity will improve. In addition, the reputation of the company will be improved, which can attract a lot of experienced employee to join the team.

It is a worthy investment that put more effort into building relationship with the stuff. After all , a company cannot be success without the effort of the employee.

Comment on “Baidu-A Wonderful Name for Searching Engine”from Hui Lai

Baidu-a well-known searching engine in China, gain its popularity not only by its multi-function, but also by its meaningful name.  I am all for Hui Lai’s idea that the most important factor affecting the consumer’s positioning of the product is its brand name. A catchy, memorable name can be very attractive for consumer. A good name is a name which the customer can recognize what product it is by only looking at it. Like Baidu, it came from a  poem written by  a well-known poet call Xin Qiji 800 years ago. In Chinese, Baidu means hundreds of times. By connecting with the poem, we can conclude that “Baidu” means you can find anything  you want from the searching engine by one click on your mouse. The name of Baidu also reveals how great the traditional Chinese culture is.

If Chinese people want to search something they are interested in, the first website we would browse is Baidu. We could see that Baidu have occupied an important place in Chinese people’s mind, Which means that its value proposition has been a great success. In spite of its beautiful brand name, the sequence is also important. Although Google enter the market before Baidu in the world, Baidu is the first Chinese-created searching browse that know Chinese the best. It can know Chinese people searching habit and make an improvement based on that habit. And it also create a lot of website application like Blog which make it more popular.

Combining all I have mentioned above, Baidu succeeded in creating an important value in customer’s mind, and it is getting more and more popular as the amount of user are booming.

Comment on “coral reef preservation” by Xiaochan lu

Nowadays, there are more and more environmental issue emerging in the world. In East Asia, the number of Coral reef has declined by at least 80% over the past 30 years due to the rapid growth of the economic.

In essence, I agree with Xiaochan Lu’s opinion that the preservation of Coral reef can benefit the society. In business perspective, Protecting the Coral reef makes the landscape more attractive to tourists. People will get upset if they see a completely different landscape as they have known through advertising. Then it is not likely for the tourists to visit this place again. As a result, the revenue from tourism falls and it is harmful to the economic as a whole. In environmental perspective, protecting the Coral reef can diversify the ecosystems as the Coral reef provides home for many species.

However, some people earn profit at the expense of sacrificing the natural resources like overfishing and polluting. This kind of behavior violates not only the business ethic but also the morality. In some situation, ethic and profit can coexist. Like I have mentioned above, Preserving the Coral reef will benefit the economic as well as the environment. Protecting the Coral is another way to increase profit by attracting more visitors. In spite of that, the company can gain more popularity from protecting the environment. The more people know about the company, the more profit the company earn.

Angry Birds maker Rovio to cut up to 130 jobs

The revenue of mobile games maker Rovio, owner of the Angry Birds brand, have declined to half of the revenue earned last year. As a result, Rovio plans to cut up to 130 jobs to simplify the organization.

In marketing aspect, mobile games players always change their tastes. They may get addicted in a game for a while. However, when they get board, the will find another new game to play. It is also possible that the game is so easy that player can pass through all the levels in a short time. Once the players pass through all the levels, they will be less likely to play it again. Because of that, the company should keep creating more and more barriers and missions to stop players from passing through the levels. If players attempt many time to get passed to the level but fail eventually, they may find another way to achieve it such as buying the equipment from the producer. In this case, the game producers will gain extra revenue from selling the equipment that is helpful for players to pass through the level.

Take me as an example, I used to play the Angry Bird as long as I get board a year ago. I found out that playing Angry bird become more and more boring. So I change my favor into the other game call “flappy bird”. Since it is too hard to control the Bird, I get board of “Flappy bird” quickly and switch favor again into other games. I guess many people are like me. They change their mind quickly. That’s why the Angry Bird revenue fell.

The Indian Act(First nation)

To assimilate First Nations, the previous version of The Indian Act force the indian student to live on campus so that they can forget their language and culture. There is also many unequal rules that weaken the power of indian. Governments invented this rule aim to reserve resources for the aboriginals. This Version, however, had been revised since 2008.

These days, Many companies especially IT company tend to recruit a lot of Indian because of the low wages and high skill of Indian workers. Their language is their advantage of competing with Chinese because their first language is English. If The Indian Act is biased against the Indian, many workers will choose to come back to their homeland so there will be a huge labor loss of the market.

Although many of the product are made in china, there are still a lot of goods are made in India. The fact that the Indian is treated unequally will upset the government of India. As a result, they will no longer provide opportunity for the foreign factory to enter their nation. The source of many goods will thus be cut and that have significant impact of many industries.

intangible asset

http://www.economist.com/news/business/21614153-sometimes-you-see-brands-balance-sheet-sometimes-you-dont-untouchable-intangibles

Intangible asset is an identifiable non monetary asset without physical substance, like brand, goodwill, patent, computer software……It is generated internally, and, will not be recognized in the accounts. However, when the company is purchased, the value of intangible assets should be shown in the balance sheet. This is because the disclosure of intangible asset will be helpful for evaluating the value of the company. If a company is very famous, and the brand name worth a million dollars, it is unfair to sell the company without adding the value of the brand.

Brand values can “swing wildly”. Intangible asset is not a physical item, therefore it is hard to identify an accurate value of intangible asset. Sometime the book value of the intangible asset can be maximized, causing a huge difference between the actually value, so that the shareholders can gain more profit from acquisition.

Valuing the intangible asset is not easy. It requires a lot of market research and evaluation. The depreciation of assets should be taken in account as well.

comment on “Returns a $10 billion pain”

http://search.proquest.com.ezproxy.library.ubc.ca/docview/387272359?accountid=14656

There are more and more people returning good to the sellers these day. The article shows that 5 to 30 percent of sale are eaten up by retuning good. Returning good will destroy the relationship between sellers and customers, and the cost to manage return goods are expensive. However, extend the deadline of refund will encourage customer to come back and buy more good. It can also improve the quality of the goods according to the feedback of customers.

In my opinion, company should not introduce the refund policy that allow customer returning good after so many days. Most of the customers are very excited to get a new product, so they don’t want to refund unless the quality is too poor to be used.  Having a refund experience is not so happy. It is disappointed to both buyers and sellers. Therefore, if there is quality problem, costumers will find out before buying this product or after using the product for a few days. It won’t take so long for buyers to find out the problem and have a refund. There is some buyers, however, taking advantage of the returning policy to use this product for some special occasion then return the good to suppliers. It is like the customers rent the product for a few days then return it back without paying a cent. This is so unfair to the sellers and the sellers become the victim.

In conclusion, there is not necessary to extend the deadline of refunding and it will cause more loss to the company.

Comment on “Online shopping forces malls to evolve to keep customers coming back”

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/industry-news/marketing/online-shopping-forces-malls-to-evolve-and-keep-customers-coming-back/article20777568/

These days, with the increasing growth of technology, online shopping are more and more popular. Indeed, there are a lot of advantages of shopping at home with a computer. It is convenience. You don’t have to go outside. You can just sitting in the couch and the Courier will deliver your good to your place. Because of that, many Local mall are in danger of disappearing. Many malls are introducing entertainment  component into the malls to be more attractive, and plan to Repurpose space to satisfy people’s needs and, all of them are costly.

Online shopping definitely reform the business, but there are also many things that Malls should take advantage of. Shopping with friends is a good way to strengthen relationship between them. You can exchange your view of fashion with each other; you can share what’s going on in your life; You can complain about your annoying boss…… I think many people would like to go shopping with someone close to us. The purpose of shopping is not buying thing, but communicate with others. Therefore, only introduce the clothing shop is not enough. We can think about introducing cinema, Karaoke, and some special cafeteria. In that case, Malls not only increase revenue but also appeal more customers to consume.  It is also a good way to raise the position in customers’ mind. People are more willing to consume in this place because they have wide range of way to have fun.

Sometime a specific store with good reputation could have driving effect to the whole mall. After people get what they want from that store, they might be willing to spend a little more time on wandering around the whole center. Therefore there is another way to gain popularity is to introduce the most fashion, most popular brand into the center.

CVS Vows to Quit Selling Tobacco Products

Comment:

Sometime a company can have both business profit and business ethic, Just like CVS. CVS decided to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in order to decrease the rate of smoking although this decision may lead to a loss of $2 billions. A large majority of people agree with this idea and CVS Itself also encourage other companies to imitate such an action since it can actually reduce smoking by reducing the availability of cigarettes. Does it mean that the CVS company will suffer from loss of sales forever? The answer is no. The loss of $2 billions does not matter comparing with $123 billion of total profit of sales. Besides, CVS provide smoking cessation product which will cover the deficit. It turns out CVS company not only maximize its profit but also do good to the society. Such company not only is a profitable company, but also a virtuous company.

It is not so hard to become a good company. A good company mean it will satisfy the need of all the stakeholders as much as possible without breaking the rules or violating the standard of moral. However, companies like nestle, which pumping the water from a well without paying a cents then sell it back to citizen, is more like they are scarifying the business reputation for profit because many people are complaining about that. In some ways, CVS did a great job of maintaining the reputation of the company and maximize the profit. It is a great model of being a good company.
