1. Tunnel Under A13 – This tunnel is part of a bike highway from Delft to Zoetermeer. This two-wheel vehicle only route is part of scheme to get people to travel father distances on their bikes more easily. If this type of infrastructure was at home in Vancouver connecting North and West Vancouver or North Vancouver and Burnaby/Coquitlam I would bike so many more places than I currently do as the highways can be a big barrier to cycling.
Despite the fact that there is graffiti the tunnel felt very open and safe to use. I had dinner with my boyfriend’s family in Delft on Tuesday and they came from Zoetermeer. I imagine they used this route to come as they said it was very str
aightforward. Clearly the tunnel and bike highway are a success.
5. Koepoort – The garages that ring Delft allow the city-centre to remain almost entirely car free. The several road closures in the area create a safe space for bikes, as well as removing the issue of congestion in the city. It also makes accessing the houses on these streets safer, as the roads are narrow, making any car traffic quite close to the doors.
This is a good example of successful road closure because it allows cars to still get sufficiently close to the city by giving them somewhere to conveniently park. It also creates a safe and convenient bike route along the edge of the city centre.
