Sandwich & Protein shake

Processing:

Sandwich Ingredients:
Cold salmon, mayonnaise, lettuce,

NOTE: The salmon sandwich was pre-made. As a result, I was not able to receive detailed information over the sandwich.

Casein protein ingredients:

Micellar casein, cocoa powder, digestion resistant maltodextrin, natural & probiotic blend (lactobacillus rhamnosus, lactobacillus acidophilus, streptococcus thermophiles, lactobacillus brevis, bifidobacterium infatis, bifidobacterium bifidum,  lactobacillus salivarius, lactobacillus plantarum, lactobacillus casei)

Digestion resistant maltodextrin is made through food processing. Food processors use the process of hydrolysis to break down the carbohydrates with water. Does this mean oil isn’t use with this process? Absolutely not, expansive hydrolysis definitely uses gallons and gallons of oil. While many of the ingredients found in the probiotic blend are species of bacterium, they are all chemically processed in factories that run on fossil fuels.

Delivery:

The shipment of my protein supplement occurs from the Colorado, United States. In other words, the delivery of my protein supplement is oil-based as well. According to Norman Church, 127 calories of energy (aviation fuel) are used for ever 1 calorie of casein protein that is transported. This is based on the assumption that the transportation of the supplement comes from air. If it comes from sea, then there is no doubt fuel is used as well.

The delivery of the sandwich is unknown. According to the lady in the counter, the sandwich is made somewhere else. Richard Manning claims that it is no coincidence that plants sprout tremendously near rivers. Dubai, U.A.E lacks bodies of flowing water and as a result most of the goods are imported. Research indicates that salmon is impossible to find in Arabian seas. Salmon is mainly caught in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. That leaves me with the conclusion that the salmon must be imported. In other words, the delivery of salmon is fuel backed.

Packaging:

The sandwich is covered with cling wrap, also known as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or low density polyethylene (LDPE). Both assist in preserving foods and both materials originate from crude oil.

Casein protein is packaged with a hard layer of polyethylene. As one would expect, fossil fuels are used to package my protein shake as well.

Conclusion:

Even though the processing of my salmon sandwich remains unknown, oil plays an important role in the delivery and packaging of my sandwich. On the other hand, it is evident that oil is used for processing, delivering and packaging the casein protein. Every single calorie I eat in lunch is without a doubt backed by at least one calorie of oil.
