4) Assessment

My Assessment Quiz for Moodle is here.

For many years I have tried to find ways to conduct online testing in my History 12 classes.  The main types of assessment that are used in that course (and on the Provincial Exam) are multiple choice, short essay, data-based question essay, and full length essay.  As a service to the students I try and provide as much opportunity to practice these types of questions, even though I do not particularly find multiple choice testing to be very valuable.  In terms of creating a unit test on Moodle, I found that had very little difficulty creating the types of questions that my students would be face on their exams.  Maps and images were easily embedded and although I do not usually use matching questions, I think that function would be helpful for things like government types and leaders of countries, but of which students often get mixed up.  The function that I most liked was the ability to provide feedback to each question.  Currently, I tend to go over multiple choice questions after the test upon returning the tests.  However, the immediacy of the feedback is what I think is important in the Moodle test.  Students are still in the moment and have just struggled their way through the questions and the thought process for their decision is also still fresh.  In my opinion, the sooner students can get that feedback the more meaningful it will be.  It also provides an opportunity for mastery.  Students can retake the test until they get it right.

My only problem relates more to classroom management more than anything.  I could not seem to find a function that disabled the student’s ability to visit outside websites or have other windows open.  For the integrity of the test, this would mean that student screens would need to be in a position where the instructor could see them at all times.  Otherwise, I found the assessment tool to be very valuable.
