Developing Design through a Creative Problem-Solving Process: A Group Community Art Project by Chia-Ying Hsieh was a very in depth look at a community design project in Taiwan by 46 students of multiple disciplines. The body of the article reflected the science and engineering side of things in that it was very detailed and systematic in its breakdown of the process. The areas I found most interesting were describing the aspects and challenges that dealt with divergent thinking processes, but I had more questions about the convergent thinking side of things. I wandered specifically about who was facilitating certain decisions that were bing made. The article talked a lot about the group dynamics and the peer evaluation and critique process but I have a feeling there was more facilitation by another party at work to make decisions.  It seemed like the work turned into a ceramic piece all of the sudden, so who decided on the artistic medium in the end? Who chose the winning design and how was that decision made? I am a huge believer in the value of divergent thinking in art and collaborative design, but at some point there needs to be practical, firm and decisive actions to produce and end result. This is the benefit of a balance between divergent and convergent thinking. The groups did engage in convergent aspect of the project, but I kept thinking there was more facilitation than was mentioned.
