{"id":526,"date":"2010-07-30T09:11:44","date_gmt":"2010-07-30T17:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/wikigarden\/?p=166"},"modified":"2017-06-20T14:22:36","modified_gmt":"2017-06-20T22:22:36","slug":"wiki-roadtrip-davis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/open\/2010\/07\/30\/wiki-roadtrip-davis\/","title":{"rendered":"Wiki Roadtrip: Davis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=davis+california&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=Davis,+Yolo,+California&amp;ll=38.544906,-121.740517&amp;spn=1.95052,5.410767&amp;z=8\">Davis, California<\/a>, is home to one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daviswiki.org\">largest municipal-focused wikis<\/a> in the world.\u00a0 As of November 2009, DavisWiki.org <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DavisWiki#Size_and_activity\">had over<\/a> 14,945 pages, 11,134 registered editors, and averaged 10,000 unique visitors daily.\u00a0 Not bad for a town with a population of just 65,000 people.\u00a0\u00a0 Michael Andersen, writing at the Nieman Journalism Lab, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2009\/11\/welcome-to-davis-calif-six-lessons-from-the-worlds-best-local-wiki\/\">summarizes six lessons<\/a> that helped them achieve this success:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wikis need content to breed content<\/li>\n<li>Business information is the holy grail<\/li>\n<li>A wiki\u2019s strengths kick in after one year<\/li>\n<li>Start with a subculture, then build out to a general audience<\/li>\n<li>Keep your content open source, no matter what<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t get hung up on mimicking Wikipedia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The entire article is worth reading and most of the lessons learned by the Davis Wiki can and should be applied to the UBC Wiki.\u00a0 The Davis Wiki started with its founders, Philip Neustrom and friends, creating 500 seed articles &#8211; snippets about things that only exist in Davis.\u00a0 They also hit the streets and did a lot of promotion &#8211; such as sticking <a href=\"http:\/\/daviswiki.org\/Wiki_Flyer\">flyers<\/a> in the bathrooms at the local university (I particularly like <a href=\"http:\/\/daviswiki.org\/Wiki_Flyer?action=Files&amp;do=view&amp;target=omg.png\">this one<\/a>).\u00a0 I think seeding and promotion are two things that the UBC Wiki can be focusing on more.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, though, I think a lot of the success with the Davis Wiki is due not just to their ability to just attract users to their site but also to their ability to create a community.\u00a0 In describing how it wasn&#8217;t just the founders who were sticking flyers in bathrooms but also the users, Neustrom explains: People don\u2019t do that for sites they think are neat.
