Case Studies

Use of case studies is active learning, where the learner uses higher cognitive levels of learning: critical assessment and analysis, application of previous learning to new situations, and makes learning relevant to real life situations.

The University of Buffalo has a collection of case studies for the teaching of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines. This award winning site has case studies have been authored by numerous instructors.   The cases themselves are free, but access to the answer keys and other resources requires a minimal annual subscription fee.

It takes time, effort insight to create meaningful case studies learners can apply to their own lives, which others might have already experienced, that contain relevant problems and issues to resolve.  There are endless scenarios which can be illustrated using the case-based approach. Contributing case studies as scholarly work to be shared among educators benefits the author as well.
