{"id":117,"date":"2017-05-30T09:47:25","date_gmt":"2017-05-30T16:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/orientation2017\/?page_id=117"},"modified":"2017-08-11T09:55:09","modified_gmt":"2017-08-11T16:55:09","slug":"before-you-arive","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/orientation2017\/before-you-arive\/","title":{"rendered":"To do before you arrive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PREPARING FOR LAW SCHOOL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As my predecessor Elise Kohno\u00a0(The Orientation Coordinator for 2016) said, the best thing you can do over the summer before 1L begins is to <strong>relax, enjoy time with your friends and family, and your favorite pastimes\/hobbies<\/strong>.\u00a0There is nothing you need to do to prepare for law school beyond showing up fresh and rested and ready to learn!<\/p>\n<p><strong>A few things to get in order&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Create your \u201cCampus Wide Login\u201d (CWL) &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>This is crucial to accessing almost everything about UBC. It gets you onto the online Student Service Centre (SSC), which houses all your registration and financial information, library catalogue, voting portal for student elections, and a lot of other things.\u00a0 To create a CWL account, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwl.ubc.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Create an \u201cAllard Alumni\u201d e-mail account &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>All UBC Students receive a free email account, which will be ___@alumni.ubc.ca. This email account is highly recommended: it is the preferred e-mail for UBC to make contact with students as well useful for professional contact. All the information on creating this account can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.id.ubc.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pay Tuition and Fees &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><em>For all information\u00a0on Allard Law tuition and fees please visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allard.ubc.ca\/admissions\/jd-admissions\/funding-your-studies\/planning-your-finances\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manage your Finances webpage<\/a>.<\/em><br \/>\nTuition for first year Canadian full-time JD students for the 2017-2018 school year is $12,148.80, and student fees are\u00a0$880. Tuition fee deferment may be automatic if you apply for a student loan before July 15.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To find out how much you owe, please check individual fee statements online in your financial account at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssc.adm.ubc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UBC Student Service Centre (SCC) website<\/a>. (To access your SCC you will need to sign up for a Campus Wide Login (CWL) &#8211; See above)<\/li>\n<li>Tuition can\u00a0be paid in many ways, including internet or telephone banking, in person at Brock Hall by cheque or Interac, through student loans programs, scholarships, and other methods. If you are already covered under a parent or spouse\u2019s plan you can opt-out of this additional coverage and receive your money back.
