Ancient Voice

Do not stray from the land,
You have security in your outlandishness.
Do not flee from strange noises,
Signs of abrupt borders,
Whatever exists your eyes carve,

The perennial order of your beasts and tragedies.

Whatever animal you hunt for food,
You are the person who still plays in those forests.

Musqueam House Post, Vancouver B.C (Leoboudv, 2009)

“Seguridad tienes en su extraña.”/ “You have security in your outlandishness.”

Unlike other neighbouring indigenous communities, the Musqueam people did not build totem poles, but celebrated their culture through carving house posts. The Musqueam people refer to these house posts as qeqən, and many qeqən can be found over UBC campus.
