I’ve always been fascinated by giant pandas, so, when we were asked to choose a topic for our term project, I naturally chose giant pandas. Pandas are a very symbolic species, not only to the country of China, but also represents organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
According to the IUCN Red List of Endangered species, pandas are an endangered species, and many human interventions are set into place to try and help this species rebound from their declining populations in the wild. Through this project I hope to raise awareness and increase knowledge of panda conservation efforts in place today.
This project will mainly be focused on conservation in China because pandas are a species endemic to a small region of China.
The main topics I will be talking about in the website will be:
- What we currently know about pandas (ie. physiology, reproduction, etc)
- Interventions we have put in place to help the species
- Welfare issues of captive pandas
- Conservation justifications
- Regulations
- The paradox/dilemma (…or my opinion or whatever you want to call it)
