{"id":680,"date":"2015-08-10T19:00:26","date_gmt":"2015-08-11T02:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/parm27\/?p=680"},"modified":"2016-07-23T10:43:04","modified_gmt":"2016-07-23T17:43:04","slug":"media-literacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/parm27\/media-literacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Media Literacy &#038; Social Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #6f2323;\">Social Media Education<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For my final assignment for the <strong>ETEC531:\u00a0 Cultural and\u00a0New Media Studies <\/strong>course the topic I selected was media literacy, specifically related to social media use by children and teens.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lg4yM7IPf5k\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/lg4yM7IPf5k<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->I created the movie using iMovie.\u00a0 After reading about <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fair_use\" target=\"_blank\">Fair Use<\/a> in the course, I overcame my fear of using copyrighted content for remixing. I ensured that\u00a0all the content I used was credited and stayed within the Fair Use recommendations so:<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>\n<ul>\n<li>the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;<\/li>\n<li>the nature of the copyrighted work;<\/li>\n<li>the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and<\/li>\n<li>the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>During this semester, I became quite interested in the idea of how digital technology is &#8220;rewiring&#8221; our brains.
