Since 1981, Dr. Mirenda has been a member of TASH , an international organization dedicated to equity, quality, and social justice for people with disabilities. She was an active member of the National Joint Committee on the Communication Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities from 1988-2002. In these capacities, she has been a long-time advocate for inclusive education, literacy instruction, and community-based services for people with developmental disabilities, and has lectured and published extensively in this area. Currently, she is on the Editorial Board of Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities (formerly the Journal of the Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps).
