“Something I have learned”

Now I’m working in Salvation Army from Mar 29.

As I posted, Salvation Army is work to help homeless people. So I work for homeless people.

Salvation Army is very nice place to me, because I can practice my English, and make a friend.

Every people in Salvation Army are very kind and perfect. They always care about me for work and English.

In work place, I work with 2 superior, Eva and Alvin is my superior.

Eva works for office work as like education for homeless people, Alvin works for Food (Actually he and she work so many thing but major work is office work and kitchen work)

So I have different time schedule for Eva, Alvin for example I will be with Alvin at Monday AM or Friday I work with Eva whole day.

1.  Office work with Eva.

When I work with Eva, I do many things such as arrangement volunteer file, decorate some files make a copy and prepare party or orientation for volunteer. And sometimes Eva send me to Class for homeless people, because she think participating Class is very helpful to know that what kind of work Belkin do. I agree with her opinion. Class is sometimes about life or work, “how Change makes life better” and “Right and responsibility of Work” It is very good to adapt to new life. For me, it is very helpful.

While I work with Eva, I can learn how can prepare the work, how can organize the files

2.  Kitchen work with Alvin.

(Alvin and me)

When I work with Alvin, I work at Kitchen because his office is in kitchen. Kitchen is very important place in Salvation Army. People who in Salvation Army are almost 300, every day we make food for 300 people…. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner = 900)

(Work at kitchen)

I do many things in kitchen such as counting Meal, make a food, bring some material, arrange food menu of month…..

(Corlin and me)

Kitchen is very funny place for me, I can meet many volunteers and people live in Salvation Army. I can learn about other country culture from volunteer, talk about other country’s story.

3.

Most of all, I can feel other people’s thinking about volunteer, every people in kitchen very passion about their job and they look so happy!

(Albert and me) (Richard and me)

And I have learned about how can manage the work place for month. The place that work for 300 people is rare. This special experience must become help to find a job in my home country

My goal

Goal setting

What exactly are you going to accomplish?

Soft- I want to be friend with my co-workers and homeless people. And I want to talk with them at least 30min

Hard- I want to get accustom to a computer skill and plan ability

How will you measure it?

Soft- I will write journal twice per a week to remember what my goal is and sometimes if I have allowed from superior, I will take a picture with homeless people, because I want to make a memories with them. And I think this method is helpful to know what my goal progress is.

Hard- Maybe I will participate in making a program for homeless people using computer skill. When I will do making a program, I will save the data. This method is to be help to me, because after finish internship, I can confirm my computer skill and plan ability

What will you do to make it happen?

Soft- while I do internship, I always keep smile and sometimes I bring Korea snack to give my co-workers. I think this method is very good at making relationship with other people, because if I want to take a picture with homeless people and co-worker, I should make relationship with them.

Hard- I think Salvation Army’s staff don’t give hard work as like planning to me naturally.  If I want to study plan ability, I should show my passion about wanting to study work. after starting work, I will work so hardly to acknowledge.

Is this something that can be achieved and is it related to your professional and personal development?

-Sure! After finish internship, I want to get a similar job at Korea. So how do I make friendly atmosphere with co-worker and homeless people is very good point to get a job in Korea. And I think this goal (soft skill or hard skill)can appeal to Korea’s similar job employer.

What is the time line for this goal?

-I have only 8weeks to work at Salvation Army. So I will meet my goal until before 8weeks as least middle of May!

Comparing Company

I will go to internship from next week (29. March), my internship place is decided as Salvation Army in downtown. I will work for 8weeks then I will be back to Korea.

Today I will compare the Salvation Army with company that similar Salvation Army in Korea. Because after this internship, I should be back to Korea and find my job relate to internship experience. So I think this topic is very helpful to me and also be help to you guys whose have some interest as like me.(This is Belkin House poster)

Work and Volunteer Highlights

I want to share about my volunteer experience. I have a lot of experience volunteering. I think volunteer work makes me happy! I can’t explain it but sometimes it gives me some kind of special feeling in my heart.

(Kimchee volunteer work with coworkers, Science volunteer work for elementary student)

I did a lot of volunteer work in Korea. When I was 19years old, I volunteered for the first time. At that time, I participated in “Kimchee volunteer”

As you know, Kimchee is a necessity in Korea culture. But sometimes poor people can’t afford food. Some elderly people can’t make Kimchee either so we made Kimchee for them all winter long.

The following spring, I joined the army for 2years of military service. It was really hard at time and I don’t want to remember those days. After I finished in the army, I decided to participate in some more volunteer work.

(My millitary service)

Shortly after, my decision I found a volunteer club through my university. The volunteer club’s purpose is to raise money and donate to impoverished countries. Countries like India, Philippine and Cambodia. We always sold India’s traditional tea(Chai) and donated the profit to those countries.

Some people asked us why we were selling tea and we explained it was for a good cause.

We made it our goal that every Wednesday, we would meet as many people as possible in order to raise money for our cause. I enjoyed this type of work because I want to meet lots of people. I took this as a big opportunity to improve my people skills and learn how to be persuasive. By challenging myself with these experiences, I was becoming a much happier person.

As time went by, my love for volunteering left me with the urge to volunteer abroad. I want to volunteer Cambodia and I knew that I was going to have a lot to offer as a point of this volunteer group.

(In Cambodia)

This was my chance to create an unforgetable life experience before graduating from university. And I became a group leader and helped organize education for young children and built a clean water system in their town. After this rewarding experience, I’m eager to continue working in volunteer group.

I have applied for a social worker position for the Salvation army in downtown. I know volunteering here is going to be challenging but by serving others and meeting new people. I feel I will grow internally and help change lives.

I’m excited to begin volunteering with them.

Thank you for your time!
