  • Herbaceous perennial
  • Native to Mediterranean
  • Large, dark green, glossy, and deeply lobed leaves, up to 2’ long.
  • Flowers shaded by a distinctive purple bract and borne on tall spike up to 2 m in height.
  • Acanthus leaf motif traditionally decorates the tops of Corinthian columns.
  • Vigorous rhizomatous grower. Prefers part shade, sandy soil. Will overtake smaller plants in favourable conditions.
  • A statuesque, architectural plant. Large enough not to get lost next to an institutional building. Makes an attractive monoculture.
  • Grown for foliage as much as inflorescence.
