- FIbourous, strap-like leaves in an upright 2-4 m tall clump
- Panicles of red flowers are borne on a 4-5 m stalk
- Used by Maori for fibres
- Needs sun, good drainage.
- Zone 9. Marginal in Vancouver. Can be used as an evergreen in favourable micro-climates in downtown and mild areas of Kits. Suitable as a bedding plant in other parts of Vancouver.
- Good large scale, architectural plant. Can help give structure to a space. Evokes a warmer, drier climate.
