- Herbaceous perennial
- Native to Mediterranean
- Large, dark green, glossy, and deeply lobed leaves, up to 2’ long.
- Flowers shaded by a distinctive purple bract and borne on tall spike up to 2 m in height.
- Acanthus leaf motif traditionally decorates the tops of Corinthian columns.
- Vigorous rhizomatous grower. Prefers part shade, sandy soil. Will overtake smaller plants in favourable conditions.
- A statuesque, architectural plant. Large enough not to get lost next to an institutional building. Makes an attractive monoculture.
- Grown for foliage as much as inflorescence.
