{"id":30,"date":"2011-10-02T22:27:55","date_gmt":"2011-10-03T05:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/paulyd\/?p=30"},"modified":"2011-11-22T13:59:03","modified_gmt":"2011-11-22T20:59:03","slug":"30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/paulyd\/2011\/10\/02\/30\/","title":{"rendered":"Misguided Revolutionaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>\u201cAn estimated 2,000 people have <a title=\"Protest in Manhattan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-15143509\">gathered in Lower Manhattan<\/a>, New York, for the largest protest yet under the banner Occupy Wall Street.\u201d-<\/strong><\/em>BBC<\/p>\n<p>This headline caught my eye as I surfed the web without a particular thought in mind; no more than two paragraphs into the article, I found myself seething with frustration.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_85\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85\" style=\"width: 274px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/paulyd\/files\/2011\/10\/Guy-fawkes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-85\" title=\"Guy fawkes\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/paulyd\/files\/2011\/10\/Guy-fawkes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-85\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Occupy Wall Street protester- Courtesy of Europe News Blog<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Demonstrators protested against \u201ccorporate greed, politics and inequality\u201d by camping out in the financial district of New York City, most commonly known as Wall Street.<\/p>\n<p>What gave these protesters the inclination to protest against corporate greed and inequality? These are citizens of a nation that has rigorously enforced commercial laws and a judicial system with unparalleled accessibility.\u00a0As for the question of <a title=\"Distribution of American wealth\" href=\"http:\/\/sociology.ucsc.edu\/whorulesamerica\/power\/wealth.html\">inequality<\/a>; the protesters\u2019 argument is that the wealthiest 25% of Americans posses 87% of American wealth, with the bottom 40% owning about 1%. However, the reality is that the 1% of wealth owned by the bottom 40% of Americans is still a princely sum when compared to most <a title=\"American-Asian Comparision\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tradenewswire.net\/2011\/u-s-vs-china-a-short-economic-comparison\/\">nations of Asia and Africa<\/a>. Perhaps these protestors should keep this <a title=\"Rural poverty in Asia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ruralpovertyportal.org\/web\/guest\/region\/home\/tags\/asia\">humbling fact <\/a>in mind while attempting to provide their nations\u2019 economy with a solution\u00a0by shutting down its\u2019 financial hub.<\/p>\n<p>In the end my thoughts were best summarized by the words of <a title=\"Anthony D'Angelo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.ca\/#hl=en&amp;cp=12&amp;gs_id=17&amp;xhr=t&amp;q=anthony+d'angelo&amp;pf=p&amp;sclient=psy-ab&amp;safe=off&amp;source=hp&amp;pbx=1&amp;oq=anthony+d'an&amp;aq=0&amp;aqi=g4&amp;aql=&amp;gs_sm=&amp;gs_upl=&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&amp;fp=56c4aa8d576bf2d5&amp;biw=1249&amp;bih=587\">Anthony D\u2019Angelo<\/a>, &#8220;<em><strong>Realize t<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>hat if you have time to whine and complain about something then you have the <\/strong><\/em><em><strong>time to do something about it.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-15143509\">http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-15143509<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cAn estimated 2,000 people have gathered in Lower Manhattan, New York, for the largest protest yet under the banner Occupy Wall Street.\u201d-BBC This headline caught my eye as I surfed the web without a particular thought in mind; no more than two paragraphs into the article, I found myself seething with frustration.
