It seems to be an intuitive notion that social media should help with reaching patrons outside of the library, as it is very popular amongst people of all ages.\u00a0 However, some literature that I&#8217;ve read touched on many issues that needed to be addressed before actually using social media in a professional way. Some of the concerns are highlighted below:<\/p>\n<h3>Do I even want to follow a library?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">One of the biggest issues that librarians are faced with when it comes to using social media is that they feel as though their work is all for nothing (<a title=\"Chu &amp; Du 2012\" href=\"http:\/\/lis.sagepub.com\/content\/45\/1\/64.full.pdf+html\" target=\"_blank\">Chu &amp; Du 2012<\/a>; <a title=\"Connell 2009\" href=\"http:\/\/muse.jhu.edu.ezproxy.library.ubc.ca\/journals\/portal_libraries_and_the_academy\/v009\/9.1.connell.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Connell 2009<\/a>). Taken from http:\/\/www.privateschoolreview.com\/articles\/201 [Creative Commons licensed].<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Stop spamming me\u2026<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\">Another issue that librarians have encountered was that they would try to promote events or services and end up posting too many messages. <a title=\"Connell 2009\" href=\"http:\/\/muse.jhu.edu.ezproxy.library.ubc.ca\/journals\/portal_libraries_and_the_academy\/v009\/9.1.connell.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Connell (2009)<\/a> found that patrons tended to get frustrated with receiving too many messages or postings on a page that they were following. Then, there are instances where librarians try to \u201cfriend\u201d students as their way of reaching out to them.
