Stroke survivors show improvements from exercise says a recent CBC health news item. People who have suffered a stroke may benefit from walking on a treadmill years after the brain injury, according to a RCT published in Stroke

I think this is really exciting research that sends so many thoughts racing through my mind… I work in pediatrics and recently took a Kim Barthel course on sensory-based motor disorders – She has a great passion for neurobiology and discussed a fair bit of the research around the cerebellum and the role that rhythm and repetition play in activating and building connections in it. I see a lot more older children with cerebral palsy starting to use supported treadmill exercise as part of their therapy and I believe there is a study going on or starting soon???? at Sunny Hill Health Centre looking at treadmill work with adolescents. With increasing strength of evidence supporting neural plasticity beyond previously imaginable, and new understandings of how we can practically apply this knowledge, it will be interesting to see how this changes services, funding etc. for our clients…
