UBC Master of Physical Therapy Systematic Reviews – podcasts and presentations for 2007

sunrise energy

Last week we recorded the systematic review presentations by the graduating class of UBC Master of Physical Therapy 2007 students.

Personally, I have to say that the quality of their studies and presentations was superb! I am very happy to see these guys integrating into BC private and public physiotherapy practices!

You can see the list of their topics below. There are two ways to listen to the presentations audiocasts. You can use the green player gadget I have below. Just click on the presentation’s title and it will start playing 🙂 Alternatively, you can click on the audio link in the table below, which allows you to listen to the presentation and save it to your machine for later re-use, together with the PDF copy of their actual powerpoint.

All Child-Play and No Workouts Make Dad an Unfit Boy – Article in NYT

father and son, exercise, fun

Here is a very interesting article in equally interesting New York Times – “All Child-Play and No Workouts Make Dad an Unfit Boy“. It talks about how activity levels are changing with the arrival of children.

Funny…when reading it I was jumping on my chair – hey this is me after our daughter Tal was born last year – and hey this is my wife….Do you recognize yourself in the article?

A couple of quotes:

A first-of-its-kind study released in May by the University of Pittsburgh concluded that parenthood demonstrably reduces physical activity, while marriage has only a negligible effect.

Those who remained childless lost only a half hour of physical activity per week, while those who had children lost about three and a half hours. Men, in particular, were affected.

New fathers, who used to log just under eight hours of activity weekly, cut back a whopping four and a half hours.

Your thoughts?

Limited Self-Control, Obesity and the Loss of Happiness – Study by the Institute for the Study of Labor

obese overweight sand sculpture

Here is an interesting report from Germany-based Institute for the Study of Labor. It touches many issues that physios are dealing with daily – obesity, exercise and overall happiness.

It is an interesting read – see the full text here (PDF; 484 KB)

Here is paper’s abstract:

Obesity has become a major health issue. Research in economics has provided important insights as to how technological progress reduced the relative price of food and contributed to the increase in obesity. However, the increased availability of food might well have overstrained will power and led to suboptimal consumption decisions relative to people’s own standards. We propose the economics of happiness as an approach to study the phenomenon. Based on proxy measures for experienced utility, it is possible to directly address whether certain observed behavior is suboptimal and therefore reduces a person’s well-being. It is found that obesity decreases the well-being of individuals who report limited self-control, but not otherwise.
